O 2 undergoes photochemical dissociation into 1 normal oxygen atom (O) and more energetic oxygen atom O*. If (O*) has 1.967 eV more energy than (O) and normal dissociation energy of O 2 is 498 kJmol –1 , what is the maximum wavelength effective for the photo chemical dissociation of O 2 ?
Text Solution
Verified by ExpertsThe correct answer is:
C
O 2 → O + O* ; Dissociation energy = 468 kJ mol –1
=
J mol –1 = 8.27 × 10 –19 J.molecules –1
Extra energy of the excited atom = 1.967 eV
= 1.967 × 1.6 × 10 –19 J = 3.15 × 10 –19 J atom –1
λ =
=
= 174 × 10 –9 m
Thus, λ = 174 nm.
